Four numbers decide whether an offer is worth taking

The match percentage, the wagering multiplier, what that multiplier applies to, and the maximum bet allowed while wagering. Three of the four sit in the terms rather than on the banner, which is why the banner is the least useful part of any promotion.

Run those four numbers and most offers answer themselves. A 200% match at 45x on deposit plus bonus with a £5 max bet is a worse deal than 100% at 30x on the bonus alone, despite looking twice as generous.

The wagering base is the most expensive detail in the industry

Deposit £100, receive £100 bonus. At 35x on the bonus, you stake £3,500. At 35x on deposit plus bonus, you stake £7,000. The operator writes "35x" in both cases and is not obliged to explain the difference anywhere you will see it.

This single distinction doubles the real cost of an offer, and almost no comparison site publishes it. Where we know the base, it sits next to the multiplier. Where the operator does not state it, we say that instead of guessing.

Max bet limits void more bonuses than anything else

Most terms cap the stake allowed while wagering, commonly at £5. Exceed it once, including by leaving autoplay on a higher setting, and the bonus and everything won from it can be removed at withdrawal.

It is the most common reason a wagered balance is not paid, and the easiest to avoid: find the figure before the first bonus spin and set the stake below it. Where the limit is not published, treat £5 as the working assumption.

Game weighting quietly multiplies the requirement

Slots usually contribute 100% towards wagering, table games 10% or less, and some titles nothing at all. A game weighted at 10% against a 35x requirement means staking 350 times the bonus, not 35.

The weighting table is part of the bonus terms and is rarely mentioned in the promotion itself. Reading it takes a minute and changes the arithmetic of the offer completely.

Where the offers have moved

Deposit matches are no longer the whole picture. Lootboxes, network prize drops, tournaments and rakeback now carry a significant share of promotional budgets, and they behave differently: several pay cash without wagering, which no standard bonus does.

They also get written about far less, because the templates most comparison sites run on were built around the deposit match. Each of these has its own page here for that reason.

No deposit offers: what the £10 free actually costs

A no deposit bonus is the only offer where the operator carries the whole cost, which is why the amounts are small and the conditions are the tightest on the market. Ten to twenty pounds, or twenty to fifty free spins, is the realistic range at UK-licensed sites.

Three limits do the work. A win cap, usually between fifty and a hundred pounds, applies no matter how far the balance runs. Wagering sits at the high end because there is nothing to recover. And almost every operator requires a verified deposit before the winnings can be withdrawn, which makes the offer a trial rather than free money.

That does not make it worthless. It makes it a way to see how a site handles verification and payout before any of your own money is at risk, and that is genuinely useful information.

Free spins: the value is in the spin, not the count

Two hundred free spins sounds like four times fifty, and it usually is not. The operator sets the spin value, commonly between 10p and 20p, and it is not your choice. Fifty spins at 20p is a ten pound stake; two hundred at 10p is twenty. The multiple is two, not four.

The second variable is the game. Free spins are tied to specific titles because that is how the promotion is funded, and the RTP of that title decides what the spins return on average. A batch tied to a 94% game is worth measurably less than the same batch on a 96.5% one.

Multiply spins by value, apply the RTP, and compare that figure against the wagering. It takes thirty seconds and it reorders most of the offers on the market.

Why bonuses cost more at some casinos than others

The headline percentage is set by marketing, but the terms are set by the operator margin, and the two move in opposite directions. A site paying heavily for acquisition needs the wagering to be higher, the max bet to be lower and the expiry to be shorter, because those are the levers that control what the offer actually costs.

This is why an aggressive headline is a reasonable signal to read the terms twice rather than a reason to claim faster. Two hundred per cent at 50x on deposit plus bonus is a more expensive product than fifty per cent at 20x on the bonus, and the number that decides it is the one nobody advertises.

The comparison table on each type page carries the wagering and the base side by side for exactly this reason.

When taking no bonus is the better decision

A bonus locks the balance until the wagering is met, and that is a real cost even when the terms are fair. Deposit without one and the money is withdrawable from the first minute, at whatever stake you choose, on whatever game you like.

For short sessions, for anyone playing a specific title, or for anyone who might want to stop early, no bonus wins on arithmetic. The offer only pays when the wagering will be met in the normal course of play rather than chased.

Every UK-licensed operator lets you decline the welcome offer at deposit, and declining is not a penalty: the account, the payment methods and the payout times are identical.

Casino bonuses: what we like / what could be better

What we like

  • A bonus genuinely extends the bankroll, which on a high volatility game buys more chances at the feature
  • Free spins attached to an offer often carry lower wagering than the cash portion
  • Cashback, rakeback and prize drops frequently pay as withdrawable cash with no turnover
  • Every term is published in advance and checkable before committing anything

What could be better

  • Wagering on deposit plus bonus doubles the cost against the same multiplier on bonus alone
  • Max bet limits during wagering void the whole bonus when breached, usually at £5
  • Game weighting can multiply the stated requirement by ten
  • Short expiry windows force a daily turnover well above ordinary play

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most important number in a bonus?

What the wagering multiplier applies to. The same 35x costs twice as much on deposit plus bonus as on the bonus alone, and operators write both the same way.

Are casino bonuses worth taking at all?

When wagering is low and applies to the bonus alone, often yes. Above 40x on deposit plus bonus with a short window, declining and playing your own money is usually cheaper.

Which bonuses pay real cash?

No wagering free spins, most network prize drops, rakeback, and cashback where the terms say the credit is withdrawable. Standard deposit matches almost never do.

Why was my bonus removed after I won?

Most often a max bet breach during wagering, sometimes a restricted game or an expired window. All three are in the terms, and all three are checked at withdrawal rather than at the time.

Can I have two bonuses at once?

Rarely. Most operators allow one active bonus at a time, and claiming a second while the first is unwagered usually forfeits it.
